Avalara AvaTax setup and review

I set up Avalara AvaTax inside the tools you already use, or take a first pass over an account that is already running. I handle the technical integration; the tax decisions stay with your accountant.

Ten Rivers Systems is an Avalara Certified Implementation Partner.

A new setup, or a second look.

Setting it up

AvaTax connected to the tools you sell through, such as a Shopify store: your origin address and registered states confirmed, each product mapped to a tax code, shipping taxability set, and sample addresses in several states tested before launch.

Reviewing a setup that is already running

A first pass over the account, written up, with nothing changed: what AvaTax is connected to, which states, tax types and local jurisdictions are switched on, how products are coded, whether returns are being filed for every state you collect in, and how your usage compares with your plan.

Not every store needs Avalara.

Shopify's native tax handles rate calculation well for a simple catalog in a few states, and can file returns for eligible stores. If that's enough for you, I'll say so.

The tax calls stay with your accountant.

Where you're registered, what's taxable, and what you owe are for your accountant to answer. The setup follows their answers: each state is switched on once its registration is confirmed, and orders a marketplace already collects tax on stay out of what Avalara calculates and files.

Anything in a first pass that turns on a tax question is marked for them, the way the sample below marks it.

Your accountant answers where you're registered and what's taxable. The setup follows their answers, switching each state on once its registration is confirmed, and AvaTax calculates from that setup.

Ten Rivers Systems handles technical setup, configuration, and data migration only and does not provide accounting or tax advice. I am not an accountant or tax adviser. How you keep your books and what you owe stays between you and your own professionals.

Before I change anything, you get a written first pass.

This is a real one, redacted. It costs nothing, and it is yours whether or not you hire me.

It covers an Avalara account connected to a Shopify store for online sales and to QuickBooks Online for business invoices.

A free thirty-minute call, then a first-pass review and a written scope within two days of the call, at no cost. The scope says what the work costs, and most configurations run one to two weeks.

From the first call to the handover, with one person throughout: a free thirty-minute call, then a first pass over what you run with a written scope, within two days of the call, at no cost, then the work, which for most migrations and configurations runs one to two weeks, and a written handover record you keep.
